As a sixteen year old teenager in the swinging sixties, my freedom loving dreams were dramatically curtailed. A thoughtless decision led me straight into the clutches of the conservative and judgemental legal system that sentenced me to be locked up until I was nineteen. Could I accept my fate? Stay in detention until I was nineteen? I could not.. After a failed legal appeal, I absconded determined to live life on my terms. But was I a 'good' girl? Were the authorities right to view me as a delinquent? And my parents as failures? This is the story of my two years of life as a beatnik/hippy in Europe and Scandinavia. The highs and lows of hitching, sleeping rough and staying safe as a girl amid the buoyancy, magic and hopes of the sixties. Above all, it is a story of the tenacity of hope, courage and a shaky determination to define myself rather than accepting the views of the authorities about who I was and what I should value.
