Port Out Starboard Home is a collection of stories inspired by the magical realism genre and fantastical travel tales such as Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities. The eponymous Port Out Starboard Home is a tale of seafaring phenomena encountered during the author’s migratory journey to Australia. A ghostly captain tells of an encounter with the Flying Dutchman, while the memories of immigrants are evoked in fragments of sea shanty’s and children’s rhymes. Port Out Starboard Home is a story within a story; a cautionary tale of forgotten wanderers, whose hope is wrecked by hidden, pitiless shoals.
