The schools and colleges were closed and there was nothing much to do for us, I mean my friends and I. We decided to travel to Sikkim. It was going to be a long journey, but there was no dearth of adventure in our young minds.

We were five friends, all in the last year of our Master’s Degree course in Science in Calcutta University. We took a train from Kolkata in the evening and the following morning we reached Siliguri.

Gangtok is the capital and the largest town of the Indian State of Sikkim. It is a very beautiful town, situated at an altitude of 1650 meters. It lies in the Eastern Himalayan Range.

The town has the population of about one hundred thousand. It is mostly inhabited by Nepali, Lepcha, and people from Bhutia ethnicities.

The town has a yearlong mild temperate climate, very pleasant to the visitors. Though precise meaning of ‘Gangtok’ has not been found, but it is generally accepted that it means ‘hill top.’
