This story spans a gap of 100 years from a period when women had few rights and no freedom, whether wealthy or poor.
Catherine had recently married Jack who has good prospects as he was from a well to do family. Over a period of several years circumstances serve to make her life intolerable, child deaths were common with the causes misunderstood, she felt the accusing looks and bore them badly. Overtime Jack's behaviour shifted from caring to cruel, then the mistreatment by her husband becomes unbearable.
Catherine had only her sister Amelia to act as a confidant and share some aspects of her married life. Eventually the torment became too much.
100 years later Michaela, a descendant of Catherine moves into the now derelict Primrose Cottage. She's recently married Sam and has high expectations for her new life. Her morale is crushed by the stories and rumours regarding her family. She is a tenacious woman, but gets rattled by the locals comments and their speculation.
The entire situation convinces Michaela of Catherine's innocence, her investigation and delving for evidence disturbs certain people who have secrets of their own.
