Ken is a kindly professor with a conscience. When a student offers a quid pro quo in exchange for a grade she does not deserve, he is tempted but fends her off. Shortly afterward, an older woman appears to him in a dream more vivid than any he's had since Vietnam. She whips him with his belt and thoroughly humiliates him for even thinking of taking advantage of a student. Chagrined, he returns as a better teacher for this experience.
Maggie could have been in his life all along, as he bumped shoulders with her in college. He finds Maggie to be his friend and companion, in temperament and as fellow professors. She lives in a spare room in his big home, but Ken declines to take advantage of that proximity. She deals with being a cancer survivor and Ken reveals that he suffers from PTSD from Vietnam. Their physical attraction, their experiences and their intimacy grow, but they both keep a respectful distance. As they finally confess their love for one another, their sexual intimacy plays out on a deserted beach. Now that they are lovers, Maggie has playfulness in store for him that he never could have imagined, but not until he reveals his near indiscretion and receives his just desserts from the love of his life.
