Follow Shannon McCleary, a young Irish schoolteacher newly arrived in Chicago and Nicholas Collins, the incorrigible young boy she must tutor. Through their eyes witness the terrible tragedy unfold, from a simple barn fire on DeKoven Street to the insatiable, unstoppable monster that jumps rivers and consumes the city.
