Four psychiatric patients take on CuppaBucks, a global drinks corporation when Asylum Café is threatened with closure. James and the others don’t always see eye to eye but they have courage. Psychiatric nurse Alice decides to start a music venue with her band Curfew. Her boss David becomes dangerously obsessed with magpies. Hospital chief executive Maurice is caught cheating. When his wife, Laura leaves him, he undergoes a liberation which turns him into an unlikely ally to Asylum Café.
April Daly’s lonely funeral casts a shadow over the tale. She was James’ only real love and her death brings home to him how alone he is in the world. Alice’s lover too is buried in the same graveyard. She also struggles to come to terms with her loss. To David, April Daly represents something more sinister, an incident that haunts him right up till the end.
James and the others develop from the safety and restrictions of the institution to the challenges of community life, finding their own voices and demanding to be heard. In Asylum Café empowerment comes through the strengths, qualities and weaknesses of ordinary human beings and the support of friends, colleagues and loved ones.
