In the summer of ’15, a plague slithers through the humid streets of Philicity, New York, and its name is Ichabod. With a singular talent for taking on different MO’s and altering his signature, this destroyer swiftly progresses from committing sporadic killings, to massacring dozens in acts of explosive terrorism under a red cloud of chaos, fear, and confusion.
The only person who even suspects that all these atrocities are connected is first string Detective Stephen Van Tassel. In the sweltering heat, while his new precinct is busy hunting a killer the media has dubbed ‘Mimic’ (after a penchant for mimicking famous death scenes both historical and fictitious), Stephen stumbles onto odd clues that only someone suffering from his debilitation would ever perceive. His synesthesia—a blurring of the senses that endows him with sensory overload and a perfect memory—Stephen begins to build a campaign against a human stain he can’t even prove exists, based on information collected through abilities no one understands.
Zeroing in on Ichabod proves to be merely the first step for Stephen. As his foe’s cunning plots ignite a citywide gang war, the young detective realizes he is pitting his almost supernatural gifts against a monster with equally uncanny talents in murder and mayhem.
This is not a game of cat and mouse. This is a death-match of lion and rat, a battle of wits and preternatural gifts, and nothing is what it seems in the heat wave of a New York summer.
