Gossamer and Grass (Dragon Wulf 2)

The Vada’s Fifteenth Ryzck goes into action again, this time to help save a species enslaved by a greedy, profiteering association known as the Community. They meet new friends along the way, friends who will become allies as the Community sets out to destroy them all. Never in their history have the Lind, Larg, Diaglon and their human friends been in so much danger.

Everywhere was quiet, as quiet as a graveyard in winter, except that it wasn’t winter. It was high summer. There should have been noise, the skittering of the burrowers, the sliding of the slitherers and the flapping of the flyers.
It felt as if someone had swept through the forest and cleared it of everything alive. Every human felt it. Every Lind felt it.
Paula turned in her saddle and looked at Slei’s rump. She could see the hackle line.
: Kenlei says he has a bad feeling about this place : Slei ‘said’ to Paula : We are to be very careful :
: What’s that? : asked an alarmed Slei, backing away and his nose working overtime.
: Charred wood : Paula answered, sniffing too : about a week old :
: There is something else in there with the burnt trees :
Slei was edging his body towards the area paw by cautious paw. As he and Paula got closer the smell got more and more acrid and began burning at Paula’s throat.
: Laser fire residue. I can smell it Slei. Can’t you? :
: Yes. I can :
: Death : ‘said’ Whufflya to Slei : I smell death :
: Dead Orumcek? :
: I think it is : she answered leaning over the charred bundle of debris and looking very closely.
: Must be at least ten here : ‘said’ Tavin : Whufflya. Inform Kenlei :
The Third Vadryz examined the area closely, sick of heart.
“An ASPC ground to ground missile did this,” said Paula.
