The Lost Soul is slightly unusual in structure in that it has 'two beginnings'.
In a long prologue we hear Nina's voice dealing with the bereavement, remembering snapshots of her younger life.
She eventually comes to the conclusion she wants to write the story of her love affair. This is the second beginning, told in the third person, so it is very different in style.
