As an epidemic sweeps across the nation, havoc ensues. Mysterious suicides begin to haunt the nation's news and a panic builds as people search for answers that their government cannot provide. Adrien Lloyd, a physician with a hidden past, recognizes that the mysterious deaths bear a striking resemblance to the research he conducted years ago on a neurological discovery he called the Pinnochio Complex. He is certain that the person behind the epidemic is the same man who stole his research from him over twenty years ago. Moved by guilt over his past and his overwhelming conviction that he must prevent harm where he can, he devotes himself to discovering a cure for the debilitating virus. However, when his warnings are publically ridiculed and discredited, he abandons his discovery and turns the fate of the world over to a young writer: Ellis Kane.
Ellis is left with the responsibility of a lifetime: he must make the decision that will change the fate of the world. With the help of a private investigator, he uncovers the intriguing story behind the epidemic and discovers a trail of deception and murder that has altered the course of humanity. Then, once he has uncovered the facts, he must answer the question that haunts humanity: is it ever okay to lie?
