The Ice Cream Boy is simultaneously a glimpse into a bygone era of Americana as well as a realistic portrait of the human condition. The book depicts a range of emotions: ambition, arrogance, deceit, lust, and a hunger for spiritual meaning. The setting is pure Michigan but the motives of the characters are anything but. The author isn't afraid to air his characters' flaws which, in turn, gives them more depth. Although there is romantic tension and humor in the story, there is an underlying sinister quality supplied by the comely but manipulative May Germany. Ultimately "The Ice Cream Boy" is a tale of youthful dreams and the reality of what might need to be sacrificed to get what you want
