Timothy Cypher is out of sorts, and unannounced to him, out of time. He has just flown three hours, through turbulence, to a town he has never heard of. His parents don’t seem to realize how odd things are since they left their home in Syracuse and arrived in Clockwork Juncture, but Tim noticed it as soon as they crossed the threshold of their new home. The décor was hideous and truly outdated, and then there was the clothing, the vocabulary, and the television shows. His only connection to normalcy is through his cell phone but, there isn’t any service available, so why is he receiving strange coded messages? Although Tim cannot seem to acquire a signal, someone keeps sending text messages. With the help of his next door neighbor, and new friend, J.W., Tim discovers Clockwork Juncture is not all it seems to be. The townspeople have no exposure to modern technology and Tim’s father’s new company, Electro Magnetic Interception Technologies (E.M.I.T) looms over Clockwork Juncture, as an awe inspiring fortress of answers, wrapped up in glorious landscaping and barbed wire. Tim needs to break the code, find the answers and get out of Clockwork Juncture before someone discovers his secret.
In Clockwork Juncture; The Beginning, Diem T. Allik has put together the first installment of a series for all ages, tween to adult, that engages today’s readers in a story of a town stuck in the decade of the 1970’s. In hopes of bringing children and their parents together in a reading experience, she send the main character back in time to learn how to survive and grow up in a world without laptops, cell phones, and the internet, while still maintaining his knowledge of all these electronic devices. Tim Cypher encounters friends and foes, while learning how to get through each day without MTV, Instagram or Facebook. He solves minor mysteries and major ones using a variety of codes that he and the reader must solve together. All while trying to find his way back to his own time.
Clockwork Juncture is Diem's first completed novel for tweens.
