Desperation leads to choices that are not normally made. Because of the country of Aldar's need for coralin, a force of inexperienced sword fighters is given the task of guarding a sheepi station through its first Winter. The hope is that green wool from Mintor will strengthen Aldar's position in their coralin trades. Aldar's rulers knew the job would be rough, but what the force experiences turns out to be worse than anyone could have imagined. This far to the north, closer to the towering mountain mass of the Wall, the poldarks reach unheard of sizes and act in unheard of ways. The monsters' non-stop attacks demand absolute teamwork and creativity, yet despite the drain of their constant sword battles with the horrific poldarks, the fighters' worst battles at times are with themselves, in their need to just survive the tight, smoky barracks and the bitter Winter cold. The armsors battle confinement, shaky food supplies, interruptions and a host of personal grievances that pit friend against friend. The Aldaran reliance on humor helps, but a turn in luck provides the crushing, ultimate test of the armsors' mettle. Will the fighters come through, in the end, for Aldar? And will events bring forth the leadership that such circumstances demand?
