In the dry climate of Nebraska there's plenty of reason to kill a man, land and water rights, to name a few. But a woman killing her husband; those reasons probably don't apply, and that's what Fred Carlson, thinks. He travels from Chicago back to his home town of Bridgeton to defend Rose, a childhood friend who's being accused of killing her husband, Kurt Cleary. What Fred discovers is the murder of a man who was well liked by most, but hated by neighboring rancher, Kim Day. Day's been fighting with Cleary over water right and he's not very happy about Cleary's mustangs, which he claims have been grazing on land he calls his. Investigating Cleary's murder, Fred finds that Cleary probably isn't the only man, Day's killed for land. Fact is, Kim Day just isn't who he claims to be.
