01. What is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is the force or pressure in which circulating blood pushes against the wall of arteries and pumps from the heart to other parts of the body. Blood pressure delivers oxygen and nutrients through arteries to the organs and tissues.

Blood Pressure - Types
(1). Low Blood Pressure: When blood pressure is low enough that the flow of blood (along with oxygen and nutrients) to the different parts of the body is insufficient, it is called low blood pressure.
(2). High Blood Pressure: When blood pressure is high enough that the flow of blood (along with oxygen and nutrients) to the different parts of the body is more than sufficient, it is called high blood pressure.

Blood Pressure: Systolic and Diastolic
(1). Systolic Pressure
Systolic pressure is the highest blood pressure that occurs when heart beats.
Related word: Systole (noun) - the stage of the heart's rhythm when the heart pumps blood.

(2). Diastolic Pressure
Diastolic pressure is the lowest blood pressure that occurs when heart relaxes between two beats.
Related word: Diastole (noun) - the stage of the heart's rhythm when the heart fills with blood.

Blood pressure is measured in ‘millimeters of mercury’ (mmHg).
Blood pressure is shown in two numbers with one number on the top of the other.
Example: Blood pressure reading of 119/79 mmHg will be expressed as ‘119 over 79 millimeters of mercury’ or simply ‘119 over 79’.

The upper or first number in a blood pressure reading is the systolic pressure.
Thus, in above example, ‘119’ is the systolic pressure.

The lower or second number in a blood pressure reading is the diastolic pressure.
Thus, in above example, ‘79’ is the diastolic pressure.

02. Different Stages of Blood Pressure

BLOOD PRESSURE IN ADULTS

LOW BLOOD PRESSURE
Dangerously Low blood pressure (50/33 or lower) --
systolic pressure 50 mmHg or lower
diastolic pressure 33 mmHg or lower

Too Low blood pressure (51/34 to 60/40) --
systolic pressure between 51 to 60 mmHg
diastolic pressure between 34 to 40 mmHg

Low blood pressure (61/41 to 90/60) --
systolic pressure between 61 to 90 mmHg
diastolic pressure between 41 to 60 mmHg

NORMAL BLOOD PRESSURE
Normal blood pressure (91/61 to 119/89) --
systolic pressure between 91 to 119 mmHg
diastolic pressure between 61 to 89 mmHg

IDEAL (OPTIMUM) BLOOD PRESSURE (120/80) --
systolic pressure at 120 mmHg
diastolic pressure at 80 mmHg

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE --
Pre-hypertension (121/81 to 139/89) --
systolic pressure between 121 to 139 mmHg Or
diastolic pressure between 81 and 89 mmHg
