The Exalted Christ is a devotional in two parts. The first part is a 40-day pilgrimage framed upon the declaration of deity found in the 2nd chapter of Philippians. In this powerful passage, we see Christ in His rightful position of honor as he steps away from His throne of unapproachable majesty and glory and ultimately to the cross of unimaginable suffering and shame. We then see the Father honor His Son and bestow upon Him the name that is above all other names. This passage concludes with the promise that… ‘every knee will bow…and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.’ Each day’s devotion will focus on a different point of reference of a fragment of the Philippians passage. This section begins on the first day of Lent (5 March) and ends on Palm Sunday (13 April).
The second part consists of a 7-day examination of the seven last words of Christ spoken from the cross, found in Mark 15, Luke 23 and John 19. There is a discernable parallel between the work of creation, recorded in Genesis, and the work of redemption, on the cross, recorded in the gospels. In Genesis 1:1, we learn that God created the heavens and the earth. In John 1:1-5, we learn that Jesus was the creative member of the trinity. That which Jesus performed in Genesis details the original creation, the work of bringing into existence all that exists. That which Jesus did on the cross details the work of redeeming His creation from the curse of sin, re-creating, in a manner of speaking, that which man had corrupted. In Genesis 1:1-2:3, we see Jesus working in the first creation (alpha). In Mark 15, Luke 23 and John 19, we see Jesus working in the last creation (omega). He is the first and the last, the alpha and the omega. In both we clearly see, the Exalted Christ. This second section begins the day after Palm Sunday (14 April) and concludes with Resurrection Sunday (20 April).
The goal of this devotional is to focus the church’s attention on the exalted Christ, on the price He paid for our sin, and the glory and honor that is His… and His alone.
