It is common knowledge, that Christian Europe sent military expeditions (known as the Crusades) to Palestine in the 11th-14th centuries to recapture the Holy Land from the Saracen Muslims and the Seljuk Turks. Among the reasons for the Crusades were; protection for the Christian pilgrims and aid for the Byzantine Empire. However, many members of the First Crusade found unexpected riches as well.
