Theodore Roosevelt’s decision to challenge Republican incumbent William Howard Taft on the Progressive, or Bull Moose, ticket created a great deal of interest and also quite a bit of derision during the 1912 presidential campaign. In this satiric 1912 work reprinted from the “Evening Post” (forerunner to today’s “New York Post”), Roosevelt is depicted as the villainous Red Knight from Lewis Carroll’s classic work “Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There.” While essayist Simeon Strunsky paints an unflattering portrait of the former president with quotes like “I am as quick as lightning at perceiving which way the wind blows,” he also demonstrates the strong emotion (whether positive or negative) that Roosevelt invoked.
