AWAKE, MY SOUL is a verse-by-verse devotional book based on the Apostle Paul's New Testament letter to the Colossians. While the 95 verses are treated separately, care is taken to interpret Paul's thoughts within the context of the surrounding passage. Additionally, seven summary meditations are provided throughout the book to keep the context in mind.
Before writing these meditations, the author memorized Colossians and spent more than half a lifetime teaching, preaching, and meditating on this book. That does not make him an expert or biblical scholar, but it does mean he has spent numerous hours at the feet of the Apostle seeking to learn more about "the mystery of the Gospel" and the Lord Jesus Christ.
In this letter, Paul not only addresses issues faced by first century Christians, he speaks to a mindset flourishing in the world today. Whereas our culture preaches inclusiveness, tolerance, and political correctness, Colossians declares the pre-eminence of Christ. Jesus is not one of many options for spiritual wholeness; he is the only way to forgiveness, cleansing, and eternal life. The Gospel story declares that Jesus alone is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Consider these selections from Colossians: "He [Jesus] is the image of the invisible God ... he is the head of all rule and authority ... Christ, in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge ... in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily ... Christ is all and in all."
Colossians reminds us that Christianity is more than a creed or a system of regulations and ecclesiastical ceremonies; it is a Person who died and rose again, who sits at the right hand of God, and who is coming to receive his Church unto himself. Paul's letter celebrates the resurrected Christ and tells us why we must keep him central in every part of our life.
