Sent V, to Loch Ness, is the fifth book in the six-book series Sent. Ceber’s entire village is moving to the Loch Ness area. Their Celt population has been expanded by the addition of Cordace and brothers, who are from the Mediterranean, and by a few stragglers from the Roman army that attacked them. Since some of Ceber’s men have been killed, their widows may marry them, but can the Celts trust any of the newcomers? Even Alyssandra, the daughter of Ceber’s arch enemy, Calgol, wants to make the move, but she has been reared in the lap of Rome’s luxury, not accustomed to working. On the eve of their departure, she is still expecting others to wait on her. In order to establish a settlement in primitive conditions, everyone must contribute wholeheartedly, she included. Ceber gives her a week to measure up, or he will kick her out.
The climate is cold, and during the previous summer only one stone house was built and about ten acres of land cleared for crops. Much must be finished before winter for their possible survival. The weather, wild animals, and an inadequate supply of food are all problems that must be acceptably dealt with. To complicate the general uneasiness, many of the Celts and all the others are unsure of the good will of the large creatures that inhabit Loch Ness. As Guylac and Amlar, Ceber’s small nephews, tell him, “We need to go check on them, or the monsters might come into the camp and eat us up, and nobody would even know it.”
