This book is not just a memoir but a reflection of Chicago’s past including historical data that led to the author’s experiences as an African American child growing up on the South Side of Chicago. It encompasses the 1893 Chicago World Columbian Exposition, the 1919 Bronzeville Riot, the Civil Rights Movement, Black Nationalism and much more…. The author takes the reader through the Woodlawn, Hyde Park and Chatham communities breaking through racial barrier and restrictive covenants. However, despite it all the 1950's and 1960's was seen as a fun and exciting time. The sense of family and community prevailed by providing the resources and support that was needed to sustain any adversity that may had existed.
