Without waiting for permission, Sophia shoved the book from her friend's grasp, causing it to slide across the floor towards a darkened corner of the cabin.

"We shouldn't be reading it," Sophia said. "It's not safe."

Before Nikki could even ponder what her friend meant, the back door whipped open, slamming against the inside wall of the cabin so hard that both girls nearly jumped out of their skin. The splintering of wood, though loud and sudden, soon ceased, and all four eyes were staring into the darkness revealed, tracing the outline of a humanoid creature that could only be glimpsed at with a lucky flicker of the flame.

"You stay back!" Sophia yelled. "Don't touch us!"

"Sophia?" Nikki questioned, looking back and forth between the opened entrance and her frightened friend. "What is that?"
