When Makah Indian whale hunters next climb into their cedar oceangoing canoes, Tribal Council President Gordon Smith says it will be without fanfare, without federal government or tribal funding, hopefully without protesters, and decidedly without the media.
The last successful hunt in 1999 drew animal rights protesters from as near as neighboring Port Angeles, Washington, just down the Olympic Peninsula, to as far as New York City. Journalists from near and far came as well.
