JUSTICE IN THE BY-WAYS. A TALE OF LIFE:

PREFACE.

PREFACES, like long sermons to fashionable congregations, are distasteful to most readers, and in no very high favor with us. A deep interest in the welfare of South Carolina, and the high esteem in which we held the better, and more sensible class of her citizens, prompted us to sit down in Charleston, some four years ago (as a few of our friends are aware), and write this history. The malady of her chivalry had then broken out, and such was its virulence that very serious consequences were apprehended.

THE LIFE AND ADVENTURES OF MAJ. ROGER SHERMAN POTTER:

PREFACE.

IF the reader will but pay attention to what I have written in this great work, it will be found that I have taken an unwarrantable liberty with his good taste; that is to say, I have so far deviated from that stereotyped rule-so strictly observed by all our great authors-as to make my hero, who is what is curiously enough called a "Yankee Character," speak tolerably good English, instead of vulgar slang.

***

MANUEL PEREIERA:

INTRODUCTION.

OUR generous friends in Georgia and South Carolina will not add among their assumptions that we know nothing of the South and Southern life.

***

OUR WORLD:

PREFACE.
IN presenting this work to the public, we are fully conscious of the grave charges of misrepresenting society, and misconstruing facts, which will be made by our friends of the South, and its very peculiar institution; but earnestly do we enjoin all such champions of "things as they are," to read and well digest what is here set before them, believing that they will find the TRUTH even "stranger than fiction."

***

AN OUTCAST:

PREFACE.

When reason and conscience are a man's true guides to what he undertakes, and he acts strictly in obedience to them, he has little to fear from what the unthinking may say.

***

SIEGE OF WASHINGTON, D.C. WRITTEN EXPRESSLY FOR LITTLE PEOPLE.

PREFACE.
MY publisher gives it as his opinion that a great many persons will be offended at what I have said in this work.

***

THE VON TOODLEBURGS; OR, THE HISTORY OF A VERY DISTINGUISHED FAMILY.

PREFACE.
I never could see what real usefulness there was in a preface to a work of this kind, and never wrote one without a misgiving that it would do more to confuse than enlighten the reader.
