The journey through life is a battlefield, a constant struggle within oneself and the world outside. And while a person thinks about survival and celebration after each victory, he or she also thinks about death and what comes after it. Zouga captures the emotion in every aspect of these struggles in her poems in The Promise.
She dealt with the nostalgia for her homeland and the pressures of living in a foreign land in “The Foreigner,” and the hope that tomorrow gives after failure grips us in “The Gift.” In “The Sacrifice,” she wrote about the pain and suffering of losing a loved one in death from senseless crime, while she explored what she thought might be the obstacles involved in the voyage a dead person’s spirit toward eternal life in heaven in “The Shaft.”
Her poems also reflect love, virtue, and loyalty, all leading at some point to self-discovery and value of life in the universe governed by God.
