The Puzzle of Chimayo

A turquoise sky vaults over caramel-colored cliffs in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northeastern New Mexico. Below, in the Espanola Valley, a procession of Easter pilgrims fills a winding road leading to the rural village of Chimayo. As many as 30,000 people are making a Good Friday pilgrimage to a tiny church known as the Santuario de Chimayo. Some have walked as many as five days and over 100 miles to visit this chapel, where many believe miracle cures spring from the soil.
