A New Year

Do December 31 to January 1, no doubt about that time elusive, a shortness of infinitesimal, which runs between the last minute according to the twelfth hour, according to the first minute of the first, - the equal passage of each day of 'year to her tomorrow, for a moment, a pulse, nothing.

Yet all we consider the end of the year as a fixed point, such as the closure of a [8] period. It seems that all things must be fulfilled undertaken at that time, and who first of next year s'abbia to start all over again.
The Church begins the new year with the Veni Creator , the traders close their accounts, and private (though too!) we bring the balance; renewed the ledgers; resign or confirm the clerks, and whoever is in charge of 'any presents a management report.

The newspapers will lose employees and buy new ones and proclaim that the new ones are geniuses and those lost were worth nothing, without taking into account the pompous praise with which they had announced the previous year, and open up new headings and new subscriptions are new programs and new promises.

It has come to the station stop: that is called the head of the year. We leave for [9] a new journey where everything is unknown, we will start to hopes, each says, sighing, "I wonder," as if to quell'ieri quell'indomani the world was entirely changed, and the chances of good or evil, prepared in 'the previous year did not count any more, as if the consequences of 1880 no longer had any relation with the premise of 1879, as if the atom of time that defies all calculation should break all the links between causes and effects.
I remember when I was a child, in temporibus illis , trepidation that I put it in my heart when they approached the Christmas and New Year!

CAPO D'ANNO

Dal trentuno dicembre al primo gennaio, non c'è che quel tempo inafferrabile, d'una brevità infinitesimale, che corre tra l'ultimo minuto secondo della dodicesima ora, al primo minuto secondo della prima; — il passaggio identico di ciascun giorno dell'anno al suo domani; un attimo, una pulsazione, nulla.

Eppure tutti consideriamo la fine dell'anno come un punto fermo, come la chiusura d'un [8] periodo. Pare che tutte le cose intraprese debbano essere compiute a quell'epoca, e che pel primo dell'anno venturo s'abbia da ricominciare tutto daccapo.

La Chiesa inaugura il nuovo anno col Veni creator; i commercianti chiudono i conti, ed i privati (pur troppo!) ci mettono il saldo; si rinnovano i libri mastri; si licenziano o si confermano gl'impiegati; chiunque ha l'incarico d'una gestione qualsiasi presenta il resoconto.
I giornali perdono dei collaboratori e ne acquistano di nuovi; e proclamano che i nuovi sono genî e quelli perduti non valevano nulla, senza tener conto dei pomposi elogi con cui li avevano annunciati l'anno precedente; ed aprono nuove rubriche e nuovi abbonamenti fanno nuovi programmi e nuove promesse.

Si è arrivati a quella stazione di fermata: che si chiama il capo d'anno. Si riparte per [9] un nuovo viaggio dove tutto è ignoto; ci si avvia alle speranze; ciascuno dice sospirando «chissà!» come se da quell'ieri a quell'indomani il mondo fosse interamente mutato, e le probabilità di bene o di male preparate nell'anno precedente non contassero più; come se le conseguenze del 1880 non avessero più nessun rapporto colle premesse del 1879; come se quell'atomo di tempo che sfugge ad ogni calcolo, dovesse spezzare tutti i vincoli tra le cause e gli effetti.
