About the Book, Love as I have loved.
Jesus said, “I am giving you a new commandment: Love one another, as I have loved you….” (John 13:34) If we give attention to His commandment to love, for some reason, we are inclined to overlook the phrase, “as I have loved you” as if Jesus had simply tacked on the last phrase for no particular reason. But the writers of Scripture give no evidence that Jesus ever wasted words. If we conclude that the phrase is a significant part of the foundational commandment to love, we owe it to ourselves to make all effort to understand what He was saying to us.
He had told us to love. The phrase, “as I have loved,” tells us how to do it. We sometimes have to look beneath the surface to gain the deeper meanings of Jesus’ words. If we watch and listen to Jesus as we follow Him through the four gospels, we will learn how to love as Jesus loved.
