One must not gimble in the gyre.
On a warm spring day in June, a massive spacecraft appears in the skies over Manhattan. As panic ensures on the ground below, the stoic ship releases a payload of millions of small green gelatinous orbs over the city. Then the aliens leave, disappearing as suddenly as they came.
Why have they come? What did they left behind? Days and weeks pass without a clear answer.
Until the second ship arrives. And a third.
The truth of their coming will be far more sinister than anyone could have imagined.
~10,000 words; appropriate for general audiences.
"The Green Gyre" is a set of nested stories: an accounting of a series of alien encounters over the course of a year and our responses to them; a reflection of human habits; and a modern day parable with a timely message. In the tradition of the best horror science fiction, "Gyre" forces us to face the truth about ourselves as much as it shows us the horrors of the alien monsters standing on our doorstep. The story casts both and satiric and stark reflection of humanity. Darkly ironic, tragically comedic, eminently recognizable. The story’s final scene leaves us with a startling glimpse at what might lie in store for our future.
Review
"[The Green Gyre] dances on the keen edge of wit and wisdom, striking that rare perfect balance between the amusing and the sobering."
