Upon moving to a slave state for a home and job he inherited, Jere has experienced more culture shock than he ever thought possible. Especially when he finds out that he also inherited a slave. In an attempt to follow protocol, he attends a holiday party where he sees how the local slaveowners really treat their property and finally understands what his own slave, Wren, had been trying to prepare him for.
