Washington will spend the eight years following the 1875 season without a major league baseball club, yet the 1880 club is one of the best in the cities long history and can lay claim to being the world champion.
The National Association (NA) existed from 1871 to 1875. The collapse of the NA can be laid at the feet of the small but talented Davy Force and is documented in this book. While the story of the 1875 Washingtons is not a particularly good one it comes with an interesting mystery.
The 1869 Cincinnati Club issued in a new era of professional baseball. By 1875, Boston under the capable leadership of Harry Wright has dominated the National Association. Washington once again fields a team in the National Association, but Washington, a small market city, struggles to field a competitive team. Washington lacks the finances to keep talented home grown players like Paul Hines, Pop Snyder and Davy Force. Baltimore tried to spend extravagantly in 1873 and fielded a good nine, but was unable to keep the talent. Can a team composed of good players from Washington and Baltimore challenge the top clubs? The road they follow is full of pot holes but few would suspect how the season would end.
"Baseball in the District," is the name we have assigned to our project to document the early baseball history for Washington DC. This book documents the 1875 season for the Washington Club. We also cover the events of the season and add some interesting side stories. This is how the player's were viewed during their times. Information about the players is presented to give you a unique view of the season. Local papers and sporting publications are used in order to give the reader a perspective of the era. Historical events are presented as they happened.
