An odd season indeed. A movie could be made about Washington’s 1886 campaign. In-fighting among the team’s directors. Gambling, charges of game fixing, an on-field riot and the season ending series with Kansas City, one of the most bizarre in baseball history make up the peculiar and extraordinary narrative that unfolds during the 1886 season, Washington’s inaugural season in the National League.

After many years of struggle Washington is in the League. But conflict within the management gives way to a period of drift. Adding to this is the fact that Billy Barnie has signed away several of the better players. Washington scrambles to find ballplayers to fill its roster and start the season with a weak nine. While Washington rejoices that it is a League city, the reality of what it takes to play and pay for that level of competition will soon set in.

“Baseball in the District,” is the name we have assigned to our project to document the early baseball history for Washington DC. This book documents the 1886 season. The book follows a detailed chronological narrative, every game is covered. This is how the player’s were viewed during their times. Information about the players is presented to give you a unique view of the season. Local papers and sporting publications are used in order to give the reader a perspective of the era. Historical events are presented as they happened.
