The Grass

The Grass tells the story of Tom Kelly a young man from Fargo who protests the University of Minnesota's firing of a radical professor, its only Black faculty member, in the socially and racially repressive Fifties. Tom is expelled, dumped by his boyhood girlfriend Moira and enters the army during the Korean War. He encounters Jim Crow South in basic training and follows beautiful but damaged Annie to New York on leave before being shipped to Korea. In he experiences the ravages of war. On R&R he meets a captivating bargirl, Meiko, before returning to the bloody battles of the closing days of the war. Beyond the compelling personal lives of its memorable characters the novel tells us honestly events in American history which affect us to today.
