East Cleveland was small in size but it was huge in family values, friendships, community and school loyalty and dedication. Growing up in the 80’s had its share of obstacles and being a teen required some life impacted decision making. To go right instead of left wasn’t always easy but with the guidance and support of a community that cared and pushed you made it possible.
East Cleveland could have been considered the Black Mecca of Cleveland. It was a community enriched by the hardworking, dedicated, loyal 95% black families in this small urban suburb. Even through struggles they persevered. It was an age when every family knew every family on the block, a time when neighbors knew their neighbors and children listened and obeyed all adults because they knew all adults had permission to scold them if they were out of line. The days of walking the streets at night without fear was the norm.
There wasn’t pressure to do drugs, have sex and or anything else you didn’t want to do. When you said no it was no and you were respected for it. That’s the life Bambi had known. Then she began high school and things began to change. SEX!, Was the hot topic. How do you hold on to your cheery when everyone around you is “popping” theirs? How do you stay on the right path when it appears that the “cool kids” were having so much more fun? If you are one of the cool kids don’t you have to conform to the majority?
Take a walk in these shoes . . . I’m sure you will recognize and relate to journey. Some of your footsteps may even be there as well.
