Today Eliza Hepworth Dixon is remembered for her proto-feminist novel, "The Story of a Modern Woman," but before she helped to create the model for the "New Woman," she wrote a gossipy series of sketches loosely based on Oscar Wilde and his circle of artists and writers. The sketches, originally serialized in "Lady's Pictorial" have been collected as a single volume.
"My Flirtations" follows Peggy Wynman, a daughter of a Royal Academic painter, as she is introduced to the world of high art in Victorian Britain. The reader follows Peggy as she drifts from studio to opera house to mansion led by a revolving group of suitors. Her chapters are filled with philandering poets, dandy authors, the non-committal French painter, and other flawed men. Will she find love, or just duds?
Solidly positioned in the crossroads between late-Victorian aestheticism and proto-feminism, "My Flirtations" is a novel of gossipy, joyous celebration of the arts at the turn of the 20th century.
