I was watching my siblings when someone knocked very hard on the door.
Feeling nervous, I went to the door and said, “Who is it?”
They responded, “It’s the police.”
At that point I didn’t know what to do so I opened the door. The police came in and asked me how old I was. I told them twelve years old. I was lying about my age because I thought I needed to be twelve years old to be left alone with my younger siblings. The police officer searched the apartment and found drug paraphernalia in my mom’s room and they perceived that we were too young to be home alone. They rounded me and my siblings up and escorted us to the police car. I was nine years old.
