Excerpt:
“The only remarkable thing about you is that you’re pretty,” Jason continued. “The last pretty intern here achieved her position through somewhat unsavory means. She was fired when she was found out, and so was the employee who hired her.” His shoes landed back on the tile. “Not that I’m accusing you of anything.”

I spooned stale coffee into the filter and flipped the switch. The percolator bubbled up immediately, filling the room with an earthy, pungent aroma. I heard blood rushing through my ears, and I inhaled through my nose, thinking carefully.

“Just because I’m a pretty girl, you think I did something ‘unsavory’ to get here?”

“Not just because you’re pretty. Because up until a few days ago, nobody had even heard of you.”

I was facing the wall, so I couldn’t see Jason’s face, but I could practically feel his self-righteous stink radiating from his ego. I planted my hands on the counter. “You’re just wasting my time. I’m not sticking around for this,” I said. I turned away from the counter and jumped to find that Jason had crossed the room to stand a few inches away from me.

“Did you hear what I said?” he snarled. “The employee who hired that intern got fired. Who exactly hired you? Maybe it was someone in marketing, some boring, middle-aged exec with a wife and two kids. Or maybe it was someone more important.”

I barely flinched, but Jason caught the slip in my expression and smirked.

How does he know? I wondered.

He raised a long hand. “You don’t have to say anything just yet. Maybe you are innocent, although I doubt it. But I find you so intriguing. I’ll keep digging, and I won’t stop. Even if you really didn’t sleep your way into the company, I’ll find something, and I’ll nail you for it.”

I closed my eyes. “What do you want?”

Jason chuckled and laced his fingers together under his chin. His eyes narrowed, and he pointed two fingers at me.
