In The Front House, a dying man lays on a fiber filled mattress. He is angry and bitter towards God and humanity. Although he is the richest man in Pastureland Village, British Guiana, he is unable to purchase an extension for his own life. His only comfort is Payton, his beloved son, who endures his father’s recollection of his past inequities and glories. Although he comes very close, he still fails to reveal the entire truth of Dalia Mendonza’s whereabouts.
Dalia, Payton’s mother, was the 15-year old village girl, his father had lured into his bed with permission from her grand-mother, Matilda. John Simpson’s reluctance to reveal why his son was raised by Mary Simpson, his legal wife and not by Dalia, Payton’s blood mother, pushed his son into a mood of escalated impatient. Not surprisingly, in this mood he becomes very argumentative with his dying father. Eventually, both men sharing the love for one woman, Dalia, agreed to wait a while longer, until the older man gathered the physical and emotional strength to walk back into that time.
Back there, in a time of love and cock-combs growing wild, he promised to reveal everything his son wanted to know about Dalia and his childhood. With this knowledge, Payton believed he could fill his empty heart with the sense of belonging to a woman’s womb. As Payton awaits his father’s confession about his true origin, we meet many of the characters whose roles are crucial in formulating the entire 12-Novel Serial of The Front House Jumbies.
