Health care costs are spinning out of control, with many Americans unable to afford monthly health insurance premiums. More and more money is spent on the diagnosis and treatment at the doctor’s office and preventative care is relatively ignored. So, what is behind these increasing prices? First, the government subsidizes big agriculture that produces wheat and corn for the masses. This drives the cost of food down making it cheap to eat regardless of the illnesses these grains cause. At the other end, small organic farmers are squeezed out because of the high cost of doing business. Second, there is an increase in the number of people with preventable chronic diseases. Because of the health complications associated with eating wheat, corn, other grains, and sugar the health care industry spends billions of dollars on cancer, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s and obesity. Too few people are eating healthy, exercising regularly, plus soaring stress levels, have created a society that is often slow to start or to sustain a healthy way of living. The need for self-care programs is imperative.
What are we to do as a country to solve this problem? The answer: act individually! If you take care of yourself, health care will take care of itself. Yes, this means we must all do our part, not only for ourselves, but for the greater good as well. The state of health care in America is in crisis. Costs are going up and quality health care is in danger of going down. Self-care reduces illness and therefore reduces personal insurance claims. This is a simplistic approach to an issue we have made complicated. By taking charge of our health through eating healthy, exercising regularly, managing our weight and stress levels, and balancing our life and work schedules, we can make a significant difference in the cost of our health care.
It’s up to YOU, America!
