Cynthia Williams tells the story of how she struggled through a childhood and adolescence of seemingly insurmountable troubles including a mentally ill mother, an emotionally absent father, a teenager pregnancy and an ill-fated marriage. She survived and ultimately thrived with the help of a compassionate, devoted grandfather, a close-knit neighborhood and an irrepressible faith in God. Woven seamlessly through Cynthia's account are her wonderful memories of the Detroit attractions of the 1950s, as seen through the eyes of an awe-struck child.

Prominently featured in the book are the beautiful photographs of nationally award winning Detroit photojournalist, Alan Deneau.
