The five senses reveal the outer-man of one to another, but not the inner. The mere knowledge of the outer-man of each other cannot establish the true relationship between man and man.
It is only when language comes and reveals the inner-man of one to the other, it is only when through language they find out that they have similar feelings, that men rise to the idea of a similar spirit or self in each. This idea again takes ages to mature into that of universal brotherhood, which is now well known, at least by name, in all civilized countries.
But there is a step still higher, more glorious than universal brotherhood.
It is the Universal Selfhood, discovered by the ancient sages of India. It means that the Self in Man is One and the Same, and not many and similar.
It is the function of language to discover the inner-man and adjust his relation to others. The least developed patois does this among the people by whom it is spoken.
What, then, is the function of our Esperanto language, the international tongue?
To truly establish and deepen not only the brotherhood, but closer still—the Selfhood of all men. To teach one to think of another as Self, or "to think Self-ly" (Sanskrit atmavat), if I may say so. Let the universal language progress through all lands, waking up the universal feeling, the humanity of all men, the Universal Selfhood of Man, and then the glory of the One Self behind all will shine upon earth and be visible to all, even as the sun is visible. Then truly will men be children of light, towards the attainment of which is human evolution.
