Her heart pounded. Even now she felt under some sway. There was something pulling, tugging at her mind – a strange excitement, like a dream she’d forgotten. She tried to rally her thoughts. She tried to pray to Kalla.
But that feeling of intrigue distracted her. Instead she kept glancing around, enchanted by the vividness of the world. The sun was setting, bleeding out crimson into the clouds. Smells of smoke and sea salt swelled in her nostrils. And whenever she looked at the men, the Denian men, she felt a smoldering fever in her gut. The sound of their murmured words was a deep music, a distant thunder.
Jevvel must be a cruel god to require a virgin sacrifice. To put a woman to death who had never had the chance to know a man. She shook her head, guilty at being beguiled by those thoughts again. But maybe it wasn’t a distraction – maybe it was the idea she needed. A way of escaping the sacrifice. If she could entice them into taking her innocence, then – then, they’d need a new sacrifice.
