Bettye broke her gaze on the chicken coop and shuffled away from the window in the feed room at the rear of the store and dropped heavily onto the stack of burlap feed sacks. She resumed the position of elbows on knees cradling head in hands. Still, she couldn’t be sad, mad, or even the slightest bit upset over the way her day was going. She couldn’t wait to see her best friend Nellie Washington so she could tell her about what she had pulled on her sister. Nellie would be awed. It was the practical joke to beat all others. And, her eight-year-old sister, Barbara; well, she’d certainly remember it for a long, long time.
