Corporal Michael Culpepper, USMC, gets recruited by Naval Intelligence for a spy mission that winds up changing the rest of his life. He discovers something that puts his life in danger, and a mysterious and beautify woman calling herself Captain Lois Roland, USMC, rescues him by having him die in a hospital. Roland is discovered to be an operative of the CIA, and she gives Michael a new identity as Earl Elkin. Together they try to find the identity of a Paul Walfran, who is suspected to work with a North Korean spy ring run by someone known as Myung-Ki, whom nobody ever sees. A man using the name, Ferris Steele, somehow steals the Wolfran documents, and is suspected of offering them for sale to North Korea. Elkin's and Roland's adventures take them to Seoul, Taipei, Vienna, and Florence. In the process they discover that they have fallen in love with each other.
