In the nineteen seventies, a group of adolescents and young adults set out to find their place in the world from a predominately Black, middle classed subdivision of Ponchartrain Park located in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans. They coined the phrase “Mithra Street Marauders” as their handle. Most of the older Marauders left due to age and life changes. During this period, the military aged Marauders return from the Viet Nam Conflict. Most of the returnees in this community look in good physical condition and have the toll of war hidden as a mental mark on the less fortunate.
The multi-aged teenagers of this posse vary in stature. They are constantly in the direct line of fire from the antics of the veterans. Louis is a teenager who has to overcome many obstacles; time has weathered him well thus far. He finds himself marching and scrimmaging through to adulthood while barely hanging onto the promises of his youth. The bond between him and his cohorts becomes stronger as they collide with the obstacles to manhood.
Louis, Dan, Henry, and John are all in attendance at the same all-boys, black, parochial high school, St. Augustine or “St. Aug”. This 1951 Catholic Youth Progress Program funded school is located in the Seventh Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana. While in attendance at this college preparatory institution, this group will begin learning the meanings of life, sex, giving and receiving love, and unfortunately experience the obstacle of racism first hand.
