Robert Hewitt having removed Michael Scanlon from the board of directors is the unchallenged lord of baseball in the District. (to be fair Scanlon does return during the season but Hewitt is the one in charge). Hewitt alone has the financial resources to operate a major league franchise. The days when an individual could field a team of local players, as was done in 1875, a long gone.
Baseball is a business. Performance on the field can make money or lose it. The baseball operator needs to be part disciplinarian, talent scout, psychologist and PT Barnum. But Hewitt lacks the understanding of the business to be a successful operator; he relies on John Gaffney to be manager and general manger. The success of the team at the end of the 1886 season inspired the ranks of the supporters to hope that 1887 will be a banner year. Can Hewitt build on the success?
This book deals with the struggle to come to terms with the realities of baseball as a business. Ultimately can a small market team like Washington compete against the big market clubs?
