This pamphlet emerged as a result of studies and experience in the area of pastoral care during the years of study at Earlham School of Religion. In these reflections, Zoe is particularly concerned to explore a theological basis which provides the foundation for pastoral care for several reasons. First, having clarity about theological roots will not only help inform the self-understanding of the one caring, it will also provide nourishment which can prevent burn-out. Second, clarity about theological grounding will help inform a vision for pastoral care, and help Friends find the appropriate preparation, education, or formation for this work. Third, examination of the theological foundations for pastoral care can help ensure that the work of caring for one another is grounded firmly in assumptions and understandings which are consistent with the context in which we seek to practice it, i.e., the Society of Friends.
