“It seemed that the rains might finally begin. After what had been a long, arid winter, there was the slightest southern breeze; and perhaps darkening clouds, though it was hard to say, as the sun too was setting. The water in the manmade lakes and canals, which dotted the normally alluring sapphire and emerald colored South Floridian landscape, had dropped, exposing murky, unromantic, and muddy beds. The fish which were still alive, and not landlocked by some thoughtless architect or engineer, were scurrying toward the Everglades, which, of late, had been ablaze more often than not. The distress was beginning to show, on more than just the plants and animals. Stifling humidity was to be expected in the sub-tropics, but no one knew how to deal with the suffocating, dry air that seemed to crackle, as it permeated the still nights, immobilizing even the geckos, which too seemed to be staring up at the heavens, looking for much needed rain.”
This is a short story about a man who is anxious for solace, and hoping to escape his own thoughts, as he heads out into the streets of Miami, searching for a way to silence his despair, in the clamor of the city, which comes to life, as the sun goes down.
He recently left what was perceived by all, as a happy marriage to the perfect wife; unable to verbalize the source of his discontent, in his old life, he is desperately trying to find his way through the enticing darkness whose allure may be fading.
Questions need to be answered, but he knows that first he must have the courage to ask the questions.
