In 1961, one of the major dreams of "Kamerunism" otherwise called Cameroonian Union-Nationalism was realized. This was the reunification of some of the territories of the former German colony of Kamerun partitioned between Britain and France after the First World War following the defeat of Germany; this was the reunification of British Southern Cameroons with the former French Cameroun (known from 1960-1961 as the Republic of Cameroon).
But all has not been well with reunification. The people of the former British Southern Cameroons feel marginalized today.
Cameroonians blame the French-imposed system and the misrule of the two heads of state in Cameroon's history for alienating English-speaking Cameroonians and for sparking off Cameroon's Number One minority problem. Today, opponents of reunification would like to see the territory of the former British Southern Cameroons become an independent country. Is the cause of the Anglophone or Southern Cameroons nationalists popular?
Should Cameroonians discard the Kamerunist dream more than half a million Cameroonians fought or die for?
Should Cameroonians disregard the historic vote of their ancestors in the1961 reunification plebiscite or referendum?
While Southern Cameroons groups are viewed by some pundits as anarchists and spoilers in the Kamerunist cause to get rid of the anachronistic system and the Biya regime, others view them as enlighteners when it comes to the Cameroonian political malady.
